HVAC replacement
What should an AC replacement quote include in St. Augustine?
A useful quote tells you more than the brand and price. Check the equipment, ductwork, installation scope and written terms before deciding.
When you compare AC replacement quotes in St. Augustine, ask what each contractor will install, what they will check in your home and what happens before the job is complete. A low total is hard to judge if the quote leaves out the indoor equipment, ductwork or startup work.
1. How was the system sized?
Ask how the proposed capacity was chosen. The size of the old unit or the home's square footage alone may not reflect the current cooling load. The U.S. Department of Energy says proper sizing starts with heating and cooling load calculations, such as ACCA Manual J. That matters in Florida, where an oversized system can cycle too often and leave comfort problems unresolved. Read DOE's sizing guidance.
2. Which pieces of equipment are included?
Look for the outdoor unit, indoor unit or coil, thermostat and any other included components by model number. Ask for the efficiency rating of the proposed combination, not just one box. ENERGY STAR recommends checking that the indoor coil and outdoor unit are properly matched and asking for an AHRI certificate that documents the combination. See ENERGY STAR's bid comparison checklist.
3. What happens to the ducts and drain?
Ask whether the contractor will inspect existing ductwork, including airflow, visible damage and insulation, and spell out any duct repairs or changes in the quote. Also ask what condensate drain work is included. Replacing equipment without addressing an airflow or drainage problem may leave the original complaint in place. DOE identifies adequate airflow and sealed ducts as parts of a quality installation. Read DOE's installation guidance.
4. What installation and startup work is included?
The written scope should say what will be removed, what will be installed and what tests or measurements the crew will perform before handoff. Ask how the contractor will check airflow and refrigerant charge, and whether you will receive equipment information and operating instructions. If a permit or electrical change is needed for your particular job, ask who is handling it and whether it is included.
5. What are the terms after installation?
Compare the written parts and labor warranty terms, any registration requirement, payment schedule and exclusions. If one quote is much lower, ask which work or components differ. A clear comparison helps you choose the scope that fits your home instead of guessing from the total alone.
