❄️What to Do When Your AC Stops Cooling

There’s nothing worse than coming home to a hot house when your AC is supposed to be keeping you cool. Before you panic, there are a few simple things you can check yourself.

🌡 1. Check Your Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is set to COOL and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. If your thermostat is set correctly but the system still isn’t cooling, there may be another issue.

🧹 2. Check Your Air Filter

A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow and make it difficult for your AC system to cool your home properly. If your filter is dirty, replace it with the correct size and see if airflow improves.

⚡️ 3. Check Your Breakers

Sometimes an AC system may stop working because a breaker has tripped. Take a quick look at your electrical panel to see if anything appears tripped.

Important: If a breaker repeatedly trips, don’t keep resetting it. That can indicate an electrical or equipment problem that needs professional attention.

🌴 4. Check Your Outdoor Unit

Take a look at your outdoor condenser. Make sure it’s running and that leaves, grass, dirt, or other debris aren’t blocking the unit.

Keeping the area around your outdoor unit clear helps your system breathe and operate properly.

🌬 5. Check Your Vents

Make sure your supply vents are open and aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs, curtains, or other items. Restricted airflow can make your home feel warmer and put additional strain on your system.

🥵 Still Not Cooling?

If you’ve checked the basics and your home is still not getting cool, it’s time to let a professional take a look.

There could be an issue with your refrigerant, electrical components, blower motor, capacitor, thermostat, coils, or another part of the system. Trying to diagnose or repair those issues yourself can make the problem worse.
